Nine quarts gives you room. A generous grain ration fits without spilling, and a soaked feed has the space it needs once the water has gone to work on the cubes or the beet pulp. The colour earns its keep out in the pens. Come January a pan gets pushed under a feeder, drifted over and forgotten, and you are one pan short every morning until spring. Lime does not disappear. It reads against snow, against mud and against a brown winter pasture, and it is easy to pick out of a pile when you are counting them back into the barn. Everything else about it is deliberately plain. One moulded piece with no hardware, walls with enough give to knock out a frozen bottom, and a low profile so it does not tip when an animal leans on the edge of it. Stack them upside down when they are not in use and they will not fill with snow.
