Nine quarts is more pan than most animals need for a straight grain feed, which is exactly why it gets used for the wet stuff. Beet pulp, soaked cubes and mashes all take up more room than the dry feed did, and a pan that looked big when you filled it is suddenly full. It doubles as a barn pan. Soaking a supplement, carrying tools, mixing a batch of something, washing a set of bits. The shallow shape and the flexible walls make it easier to work in than a bucket, and it pours out cleanly without slopping down your leg. Blue is easy to keep separate from the black pans that everyone already owns. If you have one animal on a special ration or a medication, giving it a colour of its own is the cheapest insurance there is against a mix-up at chore time when somebody else is doing the feeding.
