Nine quarts is the size for the horse that gets a big feed, or for a soaked ration that needs room to swell once the water goes in. It is also handy as a general-purpose pan around the barn for mixing, carrying and soaking. Being one moulded piece is what keeps these going. There is nothing to rust, nothing to come unfastened, and enough flex in the walls that it takes a kick or a hoof without cracking. Feed that has frozen into the bottom comes out by working the sides rather than beating on it. Black is the low-key choice, and around a barn it makes sense. It hides staining from molasses, beet pulp and supplements, and it does not look tired after a season the way a pale pan does. The one place it works against you is out in the pen in winter, where a black pan under snow is genuinely hard to find. Keep the black ones inside and run something bright in the yard.
