Seven quarts sits in the middle of the range and does the most work. A standard grain ration fits without piling up in the middle, and it is small enough to carry two at a time, one in each hand, on the walk down the alley. Feed pans lead a hard life. They get stood on, kicked across a pen, and left outside where they freeze solid. A flexible one-piece pan takes that better than anything rigid, because the walls give instead of cracking and a block of ice in the bottom comes free with a twist. That is worth something in a place where feed can freeze in overnight for months at a stretch. Blue is worth using as a system rather than just a preference. Colour-code by animal or by ration and anybody filling in for you at chore time gets it right without having to ask. Set them upside down when they are empty and they stay clear of snow.
