Details
This is the big one in the range. Twelve quarts gives a horse room to eat without pushing feed over the sides, and it gives you room for a soaked feed that swells once the water goes in, which a smaller pan will not. Wide and shallow is the shape you want on the ground. Animals eat with their heads down and their noses spread out, and a deep bucket shape makes them work at it. It also lets you see from the gate whether the pan is cleaned up or whether something got left behind, which is worth knowing about an animal you are keeping an eye on. Red has been the barn colour forever for good reason. It holds up against dirt, snow and straw, so a pan that gets dragged into a corner is still easy to spot. Turn them over when they come out of the pen and they stay clear of rain, snow and whatever else the yard puts in them.
