A twelve-quart pan holds a serious feed. It is the size that gets used for soaked hay cubes, beet pulp, a mash on a cold night, or simply the pan that goes out to the pen where a couple of animals eat together. The advantage of a flexible pan over a rigid one shows up in the cold. Feed freezes into the bottom of a pan overnight in this country, and a pan with some give in the walls lets you flex the ice loose and turn it out rather than chipping at it and cracking the pan. Between February and April that is a real difference. Blue is easy to keep track of when you have pans in several pens. Give each pen or each animal a colour and it takes the guesswork out of who eats from what, which matters if one of them is on medication or a different ration. Rinse them and turn them over rather than leaving them to fill with rain and snow.
