Twelve quarts is the size you reach for when one animal eats a lot or several are sharing. It is wide and shallow rather than deep, which spreads the feed out so a horse is not driving its nose down into a bucket and a slower eater can still get a share. One piece, no seams and no hardware, so there is nothing to work loose and nothing sharp if an animal paws at it. It tips out, rinses and stacks with the rest, which matters when you are cleaning half a dozen pans at once after feeding a wet ration. Black hides the staining that soaked beet pulp and molasses feeds leave behind, and it is the colour that disappears into a pen, which some people prefer. The trade-off is that a black pan under fresh snow takes some finding, so if you feed outdoors through winter it is worth keeping the pans somewhere obvious or running a bright colour in the yard and black inside the barn.
