Small quantities are where an enclosed scoop earns its keep. Minerals, ration balancers and supplements get fed by the cup, and an open scoop with a shallow lip loses a meaningful share of that between the bag and the feed pan. Closed sides hold what you put in. It is moulded plastic, so it is light, it washes, and it does not react with salt or mineral the way bare metal will. The square nose is shaped to sit flat against the bottom of a bag or bin rather than riding over the top of what is left. Red shows up. Against grain, against a dark bin, against snow if it ends up out in the yard, it is easy to find. Keep it hung by the supplement bin rather than left sitting in the feed and it will stay clean and stay where you can put your hand on it in the dark on a winter morning.
