Feeding by the scoop only works if the scoop is the same every time. A closed-sided scoop like this fills to a level you can see and holds it, so the ration a horse gets on Tuesday is the ration it gets on Friday. An open dish loses a different amount every trip depending on how fast you walk. Moulded plastic keeps it light, and light matters when you are lifting the same scoop forty times a morning. It rinses out, will not take on rust, and the square front slides flat along the bottom of a bin so you are not leaving feed in the corners. Green is a fair colour for a barn scoop. It reads clearly against most feed, so if it goes under a load of pellets you can still see the edge of it, and it is dark enough not to show every mark. Hang it on a nail rather than leaving it buried in the bin and it stays clean.
