The enclosed sides are the whole point. An open scoop spills off the edges every time you drag it through a bin or carry it across a barn alley. This one keeps what you pick up until you tip it deliberately. It is moulded plastic, so it stays light when full, does not sweat condensation into the feed and washes out in a pail. The square nose lets you get right down into the bottom corner of a feed bin rather than chasing the last few pounds around with the edge of an open dish. Blue is a practical choice if you run more than one feed. Keeping a colour per bin, blue for one ration and something else for the next, stops the wrong scoop ending up in the wrong barrel. That matters more than people think once you are feeding a supplemented ration or a medicated feed alongside straight grain.
