Simple gravity feed. Water sits in the jar, air pressure holds it there, and it releases into the trough as the birds lower the level. No float, no valve, nothing to seize up. That simplicity is why these still sell in a country where water freezes for a good part of the year. There is no mechanism to break when the temperature drops. If it does freeze you thaw it, rinse it and put it back to work. Plastic handles freeze and thaw cycles better than a seamed metal fount, and it will not rust when it gets set down in wet litter. Red is easy to find in a dim coop and easy to spot on the shelf beside the water tap. If you run more than one drinker so there is always a thawed spare ready to go, colour coding them saves sorting through a stack with cold hands.
