A drinker base does one job and does it well. It holds the water your birds can actually reach while the jar above it stores the rest. Fill the jar, thread the base on, tip the whole thing upright, and the trough refills itself as the level drops. The moulded plastic will not corrode, which matters in a coop where ammonia and damp bedding go after metal. It also comes apart for cleaning, and it should, because a poultry drinker needs scrubbing more often than most people admit. Green sits back visually in a coop, which some people prefer when they do not want a bright spot in the run. Set it up on a block or a low stand so bedding does not get scratched into the trough. In a brooder the shallow lip is exactly what you want, because deep water and young chicks are a bad combination.
