Details
This is the business end of a gravity poultry drinker. The base threads onto a gallon jar, and once you flip the assembly over, water feeds down into the shallow trough and holds its level until the birds drink it down. Plastic is the right material here for a few reasons. It does not rust the way galvanized does when droppings and damp bedding sit against it, it rinses clean, and it will take being knocked around a coop floor by a bird that has decided to stand on it. The shallow trough also means chicks can reach the water without getting soaked. Most people who keep birds through an Alberta winter end up running two drinkers, one in use and one thawing by the door. Having a spare base on the shelf in a different colour makes that swap quick, and blue is easy to pick out against wood shavings and straw.
