Calving season turns up at least a few calves that will not get to their feet and take colostrum on their own. This is the two quart feeder that handles that job without the bulk of a gallon bag. The probe is plastic and flexible. Its size and shape are designed so it cannot be inserted into the trachea, which reduces the risk of getting fluid into the lungs, and the smooth plastic avoids sharp edges in the calf's throat. The bottle is heavy duty plastic that resists punctures and tears and stays flexible down to minus 18 Celsius, collapses as it empties without venting, and has a check valve to stop air drawing back in. Two quarts is a manageable amount to hold and control single handed, which is the usual reason people choose this size over the gallon. The manufacturer's guidance is that flow should stay slow enough for the calf to form saliva freely. Everything comes apart for cleaning. Wash the bottle, tube and probe after each calf and let them dry before storing. Anyone tube feeding for the first time should be shown how by a veterinarian or an experienced hand rather than working it out on the calf.
