Most single calves do not need a gallon down them. The two quart size is the one that lives in the calving kit on smaller outfits, because it is easier to hold steady with one hand while the other is doing something else. Capacity is two quarts and the probe is plastic, 24 inches long. The maker states the probe's size and shape prevent it being inserted into the trachea, which reduces the danger of getting fluid into the lungs. The bottle is heavy duty plastic that resists punctures and tears and remains flexible down to minus 18 Celsius, collapses as it empties without needing to be vented, and carries a check valve so air does not draw back in. Gravity style means flow is governed by how high you hold the bottle rather than by a clamp on the line. According to the manufacturer, that keeps the rate slow enough for the calf to form saliva freely, which is needed for proper digestion. It disassembles for cleaning, and the bottle, tube and probe should all be washed and dried between calves. Tube feeding is a technique worth learning from your veterinarian or an experienced neighbour before the first time you need it.
