The 7 kg pail of vitamin E and selenium crumbles, sized for a barn feeding several horses through a winter on stored hay. Prairie soils are widely low in selenium, and vitamin E declines steadily in hay through storage — so a barn of horses eating last summer's bales with no green grass is the textbook case for this product. Feed daily at the label rate. Horses in hard work, growing horses and broodmares have the highest requirement. Read this before you open the pail. Selenium has a narrow margin between an adequate intake and a toxic one, and with 7 kg on the shelf and several horses being fed by different people, the risk of over-supplementing goes up. Feed it only at the label rate, and talk to your veterinarian before adding selenium on top of a ration or mineral that already contains it. The usual cause is not one big mistake but stacking — a fortified feed at full rate, plus a loose mineral, plus a mineral tub, plus this. Total the selenium from every source in front of the horse before feeding, and if the arithmetic is not clear, get your veterinarian or a nutritionist to do it. Blood testing removes the guessing entirely and is cheap next to the alternative. Post the feeding rate where whoever does chores will see it, use a level scoop, and do not let two people each add a dose. Keep the lid sealed, store dry and off the concrete.
