Vitamin E and selenium fed together, because they work together — both are antioxidants protecting muscle cell membranes, and a shortage of either shows up in the same way. This matters here more than in most places: much of the soil across the Canadian prairies is selenium-deficient, so hay grown locally is often low, and vitamin E drops off sharply in hay as it is stored, meaning a horse on last year's bales through a long winter is getting a fraction of what it got off green pasture. Feed daily at the label rate, mixed into feed the horse cleans up. The horses that most often need it are ones on stored forage with no pasture, growing horses, broodmares, and horses in hard work. Now the serious part. Selenium has one of the narrowest margins between adequate and toxic of anything you can put in a feed tub, and selenium toxicity is real, ugly and can be fatal — hair loss at the mane and tail, hoof wall separation and sloughing, lameness. It is easy to cause by stacking products: a fortified commercial feed, a mineral, a mineral tub and this supplement all carry selenium. Add up the total from everything the horse is getting before you feed it, and if you cannot do that arithmetic confidently, ask your veterinarian or a nutritionist. Blood testing takes the guesswork out. Vitamin E is the safer half — surplus is far better tolerated. Selenium is the one to respect. Start with the 2.5 kg pail. Keep it sealed and dry, and keep the scoop honest — a heaped scoop is not a level one.
