Fifty-two inches is a lot of shaft, and there are places where nothing less will do. A big crowd tub, a wide alley, a set of pens where you need to reach the far side without walking around, or a handler who has simply decided that staying outside the rails is how they are going to work from now on. It is a specialist length. In a narrow alley it will be a nuisance, and it does not ride in a truck the way a shorter one does. Buy it because the facility calls for it, not on the theory that longer is generally better. Flexibility matters more at this length than at any other, because a shaft that will not give at fifty-two inches has enormous leverage on itself and will eventually break. Warm it up before flexing it hard after a cold night, wipe it down after a run, and store it hanging straight along a wall rather than leaning in a corner where it takes a permanent set. Look the whole length over for cracks each season, since at this size there is more of it to go wrong.
