Thirty-two inches is the short shaft. It suits a tight alley, a loading chute where you are working close, or anyone tired of catching a long shaft on the rails every time they turn around. If most of your work happens over a single rail rather than across a wide tub, this is the one. Short also travels better. A thirty-two lies behind the seat or across the box without hanging out over the tailgate, which is why it tends to be the spare shaft people carry rather than the one hanging in the barn. Jolt shafts are flexible, so they bend around a rail instead of snapping when they get pinched between two animals. Give one a chance to warm up before flexing it hard if it has been sitting outside at minus thirty.
