Thirty-two inches is the short shaft. It suits a tight alley, a loading chute where you are working close, or anyone tired of catching a long shaft on the rails every time they turn around. If most of your work happens over a single rail rather than across a wide tub, this is the one. Short also travels better. Jolt shafts are flexible, so they bend around a rail instead of snapping when they get pinched between two animals. Give one a chance to warm up before flexing it hard if it has been sitting outside at minus thirty. After a run, wipe it down, hang it up rather than leaving it on a floor to get run over, and check the whole length for splits. Once moisture gets inside a cracked shaft, it is finished.
