Details
Forty-two inches is where you go when the thirty-six keeps coming up short. A crowd tub, a wide alley, or a set of corrals where the only sensible place to stand is outside the rails all call for a longer shaft, and reaching from a safe spot beats climbing into a bad one every time. The trade-off is that a long shaft catches on things. Gates, posts, other people. Crews doing a lot of processing usually end up with a long one and a short one and grab whichever the job calls for. Flexibility is what keeps a shaft this length alive, since a rigid shaft at forty-two inches has plenty of leverage to break itself. Let it warm up before flexing it hard on a bitter morning, wipe it down after use, and hang it full length rather than coiling or leaning it. Check for cracks along the whole shaft before a big run.
