Thirty-six inches is the length most people land on if they are only going to own one. It gives enough reach to work from outside an alley without being so long that it fouls on every gate and post, and it handles the general run of sorting, loading and chute work on a cow-calf place. There is a decent argument for owning two lengths rather than agonising over one. A thirty-six for everyday and something longer for the crowd tub covers nearly everything, and the pair costs less than a season of fighting the wrong tool. Being flexible, the shaft bends around a rail or takes a squeeze between two animals instead of breaking, which is the main reason it lasts. Cold makes anything stiffer, so let it warm up before working it hard after a night outside. Wipe it clean at the end of a run, hang it rather than standing it in a corner where it gets knocked over and stepped on, and look the length over for cracks before a big day rather than during one.
