On an electric fence a bad joint is not just a mechanical problem, it is an electrical one. A twisted connection corrodes, works loose in the wind, and starts costing you voltage down the line. You end up chasing a weak fence and finding the fault at a splice somebody made in a hurry three years ago. A crimp sleeve holds solid metal to metal contact under tension, so current passes through the joint the same way it passes through the wire. These take anything from 16 up to 12 1/2 gauge, which covers most of what gets strung on a farm, and there are fifty to the pack. Use a crimping tool. The point of a crimp is the cold weld you get when the sleeve is properly set, and you do not get that from squeezing it with pliers. Turn the fence off before you work on it. Obvious, and still the step people skip when they are only fixing one wire.
