Heavier gauge wire is the worst to knot. It fights you, it will not lie flat, and the twist you finally get is bulky enough to catch on a strainer and stiff enough that it never pulls up square. These sleeves take that job out of the picture. HC3 is the size for 2.5 to 3.15 mm wire, which covers 12 and a half through 10 gauge, and they come 50 to the pot. Run both wire ends in, crimp the sleeve down with a proper crimping tool, and the finished join will take more load than the wire will. Work from one end of the sleeve toward the other and let each crimp overlap the one before it. Leaving a shoulder between crimps is the one mistake that shows up later, usually in a wind or under a snow load. They are as useful for repairs as for new build. A break in the middle of a span becomes a two-minute job with a short length of wire and two sleeves, with no need to restring the run.
