Crimping is the fast way to join fence wire, and a crimp is only ever as good as the tool that sets it. This is the Hayes crimping and fencing tool, built around double action jaws that maximise crimping force and improve the locking action when stripping wire. The long handles are there for leverage. Setting a crimp on 9 or 8 gauge takes real force, and a short-handled tool means fighting it on every joint, which in cold weather with stiff hands is exactly how crimps end up half set. The soft grips earn their keep on a day when you are setting a hundred of them. The tool also cuts wire up to 4.0 mm, which is 8 gauge, so cutting and crimping happen without a second tool coming off the belt. Match the sleeve to the wire and close the crimp fully. Hayes states a properly made crimp joint surpasses the standard breaking strength of the wire itself; a partly closed one does not, and that is the joint that lets go in a cold snap or when a bull leans on the line. Wipe the jaws down and give them a shot of oil after a wet day and the tool will outlast several fences.
