Wire goes slack. Frost heaves a post, a cow leans on a line, and by the second season the fence that was tight in June is sagging by August. The usual answer is a permanent inline strainer on every wire, which is fine until you count what that costs across a mile of fence. This is the alternative: one tool that travels with you and tensions any wire on the run. It is a chain and grab strainer, made in New Zealand, and the grips are smooth rather than toothed. That matters more than it sounds. Toothed jaws bite through the zinc coating and leave a spot that starts rusting the day you walk away, while smooth grips hold on friction and leave the galvanizing intact. It handles 16 through 12.5 gauge wire. There is a knack to it. Most people need a few joins before the sequence of grab, pull and hold becomes automatic, and very light wire can slip until you learn how much bite to give it. Once it clicks, the tool is quick. Keep the chain and the moving jaw clean and give them a wipe of oil now and then, particularly if it lives in a truck box over winter. There is nothing on it to wear out quickly, and a strainer looked after this way will outlast the fence it built.
