It runs from a 12 volt deep cycle battery when the fence is out past the last power pole, and from 110 volt house power through the included adapter when it lives in the yard. Same unit, both ways, so you are not buying a second charger when the fence layout changes. Big energizers only perform if the rest of the system is up to them. Ground it properly with a bank of rods spaced well apart, not one rod driven in beside the shed, and keep the lead-out on insulated high voltage cable rather than bare wire.
