A solar unit earns its place on any fence that is a long way from power. This one is all one piece. Energizer, 12 V 12 Ah battery and 8 W panel in a weather-resistant case with a mount spike, so it goes out to the fence line and stays there for the season. Output is 1.0 joule, with 1.2 joules stored, and it reads about 11,500 volts with no load and 4,300 volts into a 500 ohm load. That puts it in the paddock and small pasture bracket rather than the long perimeter class. A high, low and off switch lets you back the output down when the days are short and the battery needs to stretch. It weighs 9.6 kg, about 21 lb, which is one hand to carry and one man to set. Grounding is what people get wrong. Put in proper ground rods and check the fence with a tester, because a solar unit with a poor earth will read badly no matter how much sun it gets. Angle the panel south and keep the grass off it.
