A twisted wire join looks fine and reads badly. Two galvanized wires wrapped around each other touch in a few places, oxidise over a winter, and become a high resistance point that quietly drains the fence. Split bolts solve that by clamping the wires together under real pressure. They earn their place at the connections that matter most. Joining a lead-out wire to the fence, tapping one hot line off another so multiple strands run live, bridging across a gate or a corner assembly, or bonding a run of ground rods together. On a long fence these joints are where voltage goes missing and where nobody thinks to look. Tighten them properly. Snug is not enough, and a clamp that works loose over a season is worse than no clamp at all. Keep the wires clean where they sit in the bolt, and keep the joint out of standing water and off wet soil. Ten to a bag covers a fence build with spares left for the repairs, which is roughly the ratio you want.
