This is a connector that is meant to let go. It joins rope of about 6 mm and conducts like any other connector, but above a certain pull it jumps open rather than holding. The reasoning is simple. A horse that panics and goes through a fence does far more damage to itself tangled in a line that holds than in one that releases. It also makes a handy opening. Because it comes apart and clips back together in seconds, a safety link set into a run gives you a place to step through without walking to the gate, and the fence is live again as soon as it is closed. Fit them in the runs where horses are, not on a perimeter line you need to stay put, and understand the trade. Putting safety links into a rope lowers the breaking strength of that line overall.
