The S15 and S30 both carry an 18 Ah battery because they push more energy into the fence than the smaller units do. That larger reserve is what lets them hold a long run through a stretch of grey weather, and it is the first thing to go when the battery reaches the end of its life. The symptoms are usually gradual. The fence reads well after a bright day and poorly after a cloudy one. The low battery indicator starts showing up in the morning. Then stock start testing the line, which is how most people find out. Putting a fresh 18 Ah cell in restores the reserve the energizer was designed around. Fit it with the unit off, watch the polarity, and make sure the terminals are clean and properly tight. A loose connection inside a solar unit will mimic a dead battery all summer. Before winter, either bring the energizer in and store the battery charged, or accept that a deeply discharged battery left out through a prairie January is unlikely to come back.
