A gateway is the weak point of every hot fence. It gets opened by people in a hurry, in mitts, in the dark, and whatever holds the wire has to survive that daily. A proper gate handle gives you an insulated grip to pull on and a hook that seats reliably in the anchor insulator on the far post. The handle carries the current across the opening when it is closed, so the fence beyond the gate stays live. Pull it and the span goes slack and dead in your hand. That is the whole job, but it only works if the handle is long enough to grip with gloves on and stiff enough that it does not fold when you lean on it. Anchor it to a screw-on gate handle insulator rather than hooking it around a bare t-post, and leave enough slack in the span that frost heave and a cold snap do not put the whole gateway under tension. Blue shows up well against snow, which matters more here than in most places.
