An electric fence is several miles of wire strung across open country on insulated posts, which makes it an excellent antenna for a summer thunderstorm. It does not take a direct strike to do damage. A close hit induces a surge into the line, that surge runs back down the wire to the energizer, and the energizer is finished. A lightning arrestor is fitted in the fence line between the fence and the energizer, with its own connection to ground. When the voltage on the line spikes far above anything the fencer produces, the arrestor gives it a path to earth instead of letting it into the equipment. Anybody farming on the Prairies knows what a July storm season looks like. The arrestor costs a fraction of a mains energizer and a small fraction of a lost season of fence, so it is cheap protection on any permanent installation, and particularly on long runs and on anything sitting up on high open ground. Give it its own ground rod rather than sharing the energizer earth, and check the connection each spring. An arrestor with a corroded ground connection is not protecting anything, and there is no way to tell by looking at the fence.
