Grounding is where most electric fences quietly fail. The pulse has to travel out through the fence, through the animal, into the soil and back to the energizer through the ground rods. If any part of that return path is weak, the fence hits soft no matter what the energizer is capable of on paper. This is a purpose-made earthing cable, one metre or about 39 inches, insulated for fence voltage. Using proper cable here rather than a piece of scrap wire is not fussiness. Insulation rated for the pulse keeps the current in the conductor and going where it is meant to go, instead of tracking off into whatever the cable happens to be resting against. On the Prairies the ground system deserves more attention than it usually gets, because soil conductivity swings enormously through the year. Ground that returns a pulse fine in a wet June is dry and resistive by late August and frozen solid by December, and a marginal earth that just barely works in summer will not work at all in winter. Get the rods into the best moisture-holding ground you can find, run enough of them, and connect them with cable that is doing its job.
