Sometimes you only need one. A line has gone slack over a season, or a new stretch of fence needs an adjustment point, and buying twenty-five to fix one run does not make sense. This is the same in-line tensioner sold individually. It goes into the wire itself rather than at the end assembly, which is what makes it worth having. You cut it in at a spot you can reach, and from then on that run can be tightened from where you are standing instead of at a braced corner three hundred yards away. On a fence that crosses a coulee or a bush line, that is worth a great deal. Tension in a fence is not something you set once. Wire moves through a sixty-degree annual temperature range, posts lift with frost and settle again with the thaw, and cattle rubbing and leaning stretch a line steadily all summer. A fence with tensioners in it gets a few clicks each spring and keeps working. A fence without them gets rebuilt. Keep a couple in the fencing bag, because a slack line spotted on the way past is a two-minute job if you have the part with you.
