Turning a fence off should not involve walking back to the energizer. A fence-line switch lets you kill power where you are standing, and this is the heavy-duty version, a bigger and more robust body than the light-duty switches, made for the gates and main lines you actually use every day. The everyday cases are moving cattle through a lane, working on a section of line, or letting somebody unfamiliar with the place through a gate without a story about it afterwards. The other case is fault-finding. Being able to isolate one branch at a time and watch the tester is how you narrow a short down to a single run without walking the whole system. Heavy duty matters here for two reasons. One is the voltage, since a fence switch has to open a circuit carrying several thousand volts in a pulse and a light switch body will arc and eventually fail. The other is winter. A switch that is easy to work with a bare finger in July is a different proposition with a mitt on at minus thirty. Mount it on a solid post somewhere you can find it above the snowline.
