Aluminum wire is what you run when the fence is long and it is staying. At 1.8 mm, about 0.07 inch, on a 400 m roll of roughly 1,312 feet, this is permanent fence conductor rather than temporary line. The reason to use aluminum instead of steel is conductivity. Aluminum carries a fence pulse better than galvanized steel of the same diameter, so on a long run the voltage at the far end stays closer to what the energizer is putting out. On a place where a single line might go a mile or more before it turns a corner, that difference is the whole argument. Aluminum is also lighter to handle and it does not rust. The trade-off is that it is softer than steel, so it will not take the same brute tension and it work-hardens if you keep bending it in one spot. Run it with in-line tensioners rather than trying to pull it drum-tight, and let the tensioners take up the seasonal movement. Between frost lifting posts and a sixty-degree swing from a minus thirty winter to a plus thirty summer, every wire on this side of the country needs somewhere to go.
