There is no substitute for a real reading. A fence can be on and still not be doing its job. A system putting out 2,000 volts will not hold a cow in full winter coat, and it will read as live on any simple checker you own. This tester goes to 10,000 volts and gives you the number. What you do with the number is compare it. Read at the energizer, then read at the far end of the run. A big drop between the two means the problem is in the fence: vegetation on the line, a bad joint, a cracked insulator, or a cheap conductor stretched over too long a run. Nearly the same reading at both ends but low everywhere means the problem is at the energizer or in the ground system, and it is usually the ground. Test at the same points on a regular basis so you build a baseline. Fences do not usually fail overnight, they slide. Knowing that a line reading 7,000 volts in June is reading 4,000 in August tells you something is going on well before the cattle work it out for themselves.
