There are two questions you ask about an electric fence. The first is how many volts it is reading, which needs a digital tester. The second, asked far more often, is simply whether it is on at all. That is what this checker answers, with a visual indicator and an audible one. The audible part is more useful than it sounds. Walking a fence line in bright sun, a small indicator light is hard to see. A sound is not. And a tester that sounds in time with the pulse tells you the energizer is actually cycling, not just that something is present on the line. Keep one in the truck and one hanging by the door. The gap between a fence going down and somebody noticing is where stock get out, and on a place with several miles of line the only way to close that gap is to make checking effortless. Fifteen seconds on the way past a gate is enough. Check more often through spring melt and after a windstorm, since a downed branch across a line or a section sitting in meltwater will pull a whole system down quietly.
