A wire fence does not stay tight. Temperature swings between minus thirty and plus thirty move a wire a long way, frost lifts posts, and animals leaning on a line stretch it. An equalisation spring is the component that absorbs all of that instead of letting it come off the corner posts. Installed in the run, the spring stays under tension and gives when the line needs to move. Kerbl describes it as easing strain on the wire and the corner posts, balancing temperature variation and keeping the fence flexible. In practice that is the difference between a fence that sags in summer and pulls posts in winter, and one that holds a working tension all year. The stainless version will not rust out where it sits, which matters for a part that is under load every day of its life. The design includes a protective tube so horse hair does not get caught in the coils, a real consideration on any fence horses lean over. Fit one per long straight run, near a corner or end assembly rather than mid-span, and set the initial tension in mild weather so the spring has room to work in both directions.
