A gate handle is the part of an electric fence that everybody touches, so it is the part that wears out. This is the economy version in black, a plain insulated handle for hooking a gate line onto an anchor and unhooking it when you need through. The insulated body is the whole job. It lets you break the circuit and swing the gate open while the line stays live on the fence side. The handle is the only place in a fence system that is designed to be grabbed, which is exactly why it should be replaced the moment the insulation cracks rather than nursed along for another season. Cracking is what happens to gate handles in this climate. UV over a long summer makes the plastic brittle, then a winter of being grabbed with a mitt at minus thirty finishes it off. Once the body is split, the handle is not insulating anything and the next person through finds that out the hard way. Buy a couple of spares and keep them in the truck. Every gate on the place uses one, and they all age at about the same rate.
