Red means live. Running the fence-side lead in red and the earth side in green takes about four seconds of thought at install time and saves real confusion later, particularly if somebody other than you ends up troubleshooting the system on a cold morning. This is a 100 cm lead, about 39 inches, insulated for fence voltage, with an eyelet terminal crimped on the end. It runs from the fence terminal on the energizer out to the first insulator or terminal post, or serves as a jumper anywhere in the system that needs a solid permanent connection rather than a clip. Do not substitute ordinary wire here. An energizer puts out several thousand volts in a short pulse, and the insulation on automotive or household wire is not rated for it. What happens is not a dramatic failure but a slow one. Current tracks through the insulation to whatever the cable is lying against, the fence reads a few thousand volts low, and cattle start testing it. Keep the run short, keep it up off the ground, and clamp the eyelet down tight.
