Colour coding an electric fence system is not fussiness, it is what makes it possible for somebody else to work on it. Green is the conventional earth colour, so a green lead running from the energizer terminal down to the ground rods tells anyone looking at the setup exactly what they are looking at. That matters more than it sounds. Grounding is the single most common weak point in an electric fence and the first thing to check when a system reads low. If the earth leads are the same colour as everything else, tracing them means following each one by hand. If the earth side is green, you find it in a second. The lead itself is 100 cm, roughly 39 inches, insulated for fence voltage and finished with an eyelet terminal that bolts down on a ground rod clamp or an energizer terminal. Prairie ground goes bone dry in August and freezes solid in December, and both conditions cut a ground system down badly. That is exactly when you want to be able to find and check the earth connections quickly rather than guessing at them.
