Half the fence calls that start with the fence is dead end with a flat battery. This tester covers the 6 to 20 volt range, which takes in the 6 volt and 12 volt batteries used on portable and solar energizers, and it tells you in seconds which side of the problem you are on. That distinction is worth having before you start pulling a system apart. A weak battery and a failed energizer look identical out at the fence line, because both give you a low reading and stock walking through. The fix is completely different. Checking the battery first means you are not hauling a perfectly good fencer into town. Batteries are the weak link in a Prairie winter. Cold cuts available capacity hard, a solar panel buried under snow or glazed with frost puts almost nothing back, and a battery that ran a fence fine in July will not hold up in January. Get in the habit of testing at the start of a cold snap rather than after it, and keep this with the fence tester in the truck so both checks happen on the same walk.
