Details
Scotts Weed B Gon MAX Weed Control Concentrate for Lawns is a DOMESTIC-class selective herbicide registered by Health Canada under PCP Reg. No. 33359 to Scotts Canada Ltd. Its active ingredient is iron (present as FeHEDTA) at 2.0%, as a solution concentrate that is mixed with water before use. The label covers containers from 100 mL to 4 L; this listing is the 1 L bottle. Its only active ingredient is iron, a different chemistry from the Killex and Roundup products. What the label covers: "For use on lawn turf consisting of one or more of Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fescue (tall fescue, chewings fescue, and/or creeping fescue) for control or suppression of broadleaf weeds." The label's weed list: dandelion, English daisy, false dandelion, white clover, black medic, bull thistle, Canada thistle, common chickweed, creeping buttercup, slender speedwell, narrow-leaved plantain, broad-leaved plantain (suppression only), dove's-foot geranium, wild geranium, lawn burweed, moss and algae. How to mix and apply, from the label: "SHAKE WELL BEFORE USING." For hand-held or backpack sprayers: "Mix 125 mL of Scotts® Weed B Gon® Max Weed Control Concentrate for Lawns with 1 L water." "Use a coarse nozzle setting to reduce drift." "Apply the mixed solution at a rate of 100-400 mL/m2." "The standard rate is 200 mL spray/m2"; the label calls for the higher rate on broad-leaved plantain, creeping buttercup and Canada thistle and the lower rate on moss, black medic, slender speedwell, wild geranium and weed seedlings. With the Scotts Dial ‘N Spray hose-end sprayer: "Set the dial on the Dial ‘N Spray® applicator to 55 and go over the application area twice following label directions." "One litre of product will treat between 22.5 and 90 m2". At 125 mL per litre of water, the 1 L bottle makes 8 L of spray (arithmetic, not a label statement). "Spray weeds until foliage is thoroughly soaked, just to the point of runoff." "Repeat treatment every three to four weeks if necessary, up to a maximum of 4 applications per area per year." Label limits, as printed: "Do not apply to bentgrass." "Do not apply to newly seeded areas until 4 or more weeks after grass seedlings have emerged." "Avoid spraying desirable plants. Any desirable plants or structures accidentally contacted should be rinsed immediately with water." "Do not apply if rainfall is expected within 3 hours of application." "Do not irrigate within 3 hours of application." The label also says to water the lawn well before treating, not to treat drought-stressed grass, and not to apply when the daytime temperature will exceed 30 °C. What to expect, from the label: "Susceptible weeds, moss or algae will turn brown or black." It also says grass blades can darken for a few days to weeks after treatment and that the product may stain thatch. Precautions, as printed: "CAUTION: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. Causes slight eye irritation." "Avoid contact with skin or clothing." "Wear waterproof gloves during application or during mixing, loading, and repair/clean-up activities." "Do not re-enter or allow re-entry into treated areas until the spray is dried." "Prolonged or frequently repeated skin contact may cause allergic reactions in some individuals." The front panel reads "POTENTIAL SKIN SENSITIZER". First aid is printed on the label; take the container with you when seeking medical attention. Storage: "Protect from freezing." "To prevent contamination store this product away from food or feed." Disposal: "Do not reuse empty container. Dispose of empty container with household garbage." Where to buy: Pipestone Farm Supply lists Scotts Weed B Gon MAX Weed Control Concentrate for Lawns 1 L in store in Millet, Alberta (between Leduc and Wetaskiwin, south of Edmonton) and online, alongside the 500 mL bottle. For spot treatment without mixing, the Weed B Gon MAX Ready-To-Use 1 L (PCP 29694) and the Ready-To-Spray for Lawns hose-end bottle (PCP 33360) are listed too. Pesticides are regulated by Health Canada; read and follow the label before every use.
