Grubs are beetle larvae living in the top few centimetres of soil, chewing off grass roots. The damage shows up as patches of lawn that go brown in late summer despite watering, and that lift up like a loose carpet because there are no roots holding them. The other tell is skunks, crows and magpies tearing up the turf — they are digging for grubs, and their damage is often worse than the grubs' own. Confirm before you treat. Cut and fold back a square of sod about the size of a dinner plate in an affected area and count what you find. A few grubs per square foot is normal in any healthy lawn and needs nothing. A dozen or more is a problem worth treating. Applying a grub product to a lawn that is brown for some other reason — drought, dog urine, dull mower blade, disease — spends money and accomplishes nothing. Timing decides whether it works. Grubs are small, near the surface and easiest to kill in mid to late summer when they have just hatched; large grubs feeding deep in the fall and again in spring are much harder to control. Check the label for the recommended application window in your area, spread it evenly with a spreader rather than by hand, and water it in as the label directs — granules sitting dry on the surface never reach the grubs. This is a registered pesticide. Follow the label for rate, timing and re-entry, keep children and pets off until it has been watered in and dried, and do not apply where it will wash into a storm drain or water body. Store sealed and dry, out of reach of children.
