Not knowing how much is left in the gun is a small irritation that becomes a real one at about the two hundredth animal. You either stop and check, or you run the cylinder dry mid-stroke and have to prime it again. A clear barrel removes the question entirely. This is the 25 mL semi-automatic repeater on a plastic frame with a Lexan cylinder, a clear and tough polycarbonate you can read the level through at arm's length. The dose adjuster runs from 0.5 mL to 25 mL in 0.5 mL steps, set by lining your figure up with the arrow on top of the gun, and it fills through the tip from an inverted bottle. The limit on Lexan is chemical. It is excellent with ordinary aqueous products and it is the more pleasant barrel to work with day to day, but oil-based formulations are harder on clear polycarbonate than they are on polypropylene. If oil-based product is part of your programme, specify the poly-barrelled version of the same gun, or keep an oil-base barrel kit on the shelf for this one. Clean it out with hot soapy water and a clean rinse after every use, unscrew the cylinder and lubricate the O-ring and moving parts, and it will hold its dose accuracy for years. Spares are 25 mL specific. Ask your veterinarian which products are appropriate for the instrument you have.
