Two repeaters on a chute-side table look the same from a metre away, and that is how the wrong gun gets picked up. Tape falls off, marker wears away by lunchtime, and writing on a barrel means writing on the part you scrub hardest. Changing the knob is the one identifier that survives a wash. The set is four knobs in four colours, and they thread onto the push rod of the 25 mL and 50 mL semi-automatic repeaters in place of the standard black one. The fitting is the same on both sizes, so a mixed set of guns can all be colour-coded out of the one pack. They swap over by hand. Unscrew the old knob, thread the new one down until it seats, and the gun is marked for as long as that knob is on it. Nothing else on the instrument changes and the dose setting is untouched. Most operations pick a colour per product or per pen and stick to it. Whatever system you land on, the decision about what actually goes in each gun stays with your veterinarian and the label on the container.
