Eighteen gauge is a step finer than the 16 most cattle crews default to. The smaller bore puts a smaller hole in the animal and disturbs less tissue, which suits lighter cattle, calves and thinner-bodied fluid. What you give up is flow: push something thick through an 18 and both you and the injector mechanism will feel it. Aluminum hub, disposable, 100 per box. At one inch it is a general-purpose length for the lighter end of the herd and for small stock. The place an 18 goes wrong is in a rank mature cow. Run a fine needle into cattle that warrant a heavier one and you will straighten a few, break the odd one, and put avoidable load on the gun. Match the needle to the animal in front of you rather than to whatever box happens to be open. Seat the hub firmly, change needles through the run instead of at the end of it, never reuse a bent one, and keep a sharps container within reach. Anything about what you are administering, at what dose or by what route, belongs with your veterinarian or the label.
