Mad Barn w-3 Oil is a liquid fat supplement for horses, made by Mad Barn Inc. of Petersburg, Ontario. This listing is the 5 L jug. Active ingredients on the label, per 100 mL: a proprietary blend of soybean, flax and DHA oil, 99 mL; DHA (minimum) 1,500 mg; Vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol) 1,000 mg. Ingredients, as listed: soybean oil, flax oil, heterotrophic algae (DHA oil), d-alpha-tocopherol (natural vitamin E) and flavour. Excipient ingredient: lecithin. Directions for use, quoted from the label: "Administer orally top dressed on feed. Product should be introduced gradually and increased as necessary. Total dietary fat should not exceed 8% for equine diets." The label gives two feeding rates: "Maintenance: 100 mL per day per 500 kg (1100 lb) of body weight" and "Weight Management: 200 mL per day per 500 kg (1100 lb) of body weight." At 100 mL a day for a 500 kg horse, a 5 L jug is about 50 days; at 200 mL, half that. Cautions, quoted from the label: "Do not use in animals with bleeding disorders, unless directed by a veterinarian." Storage, quoted: "Store inside away from heat, sparks and flame. Protect from freezing temperatures." In an Alberta winter the second line is the one to plan for: the jug should not live in an unheated barn.
