Mad Barn Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR) is a single-ingredient powder for horses, packaged by Mad Barn Inc. of Petersburg, Ontario, in a 1 kg pail. Active ingredient on the label: Acetyl-L-Carnitine Hydrochloride, 10 g per 10 g serving, with no other ingredients listed. Directions for use, quoted from the label: "Consult with a nutritionist or veterinarian prior to use. Provide daily. Top dress once daily on feed or ration." The body-weight table: under 200 kg, one scoop (5 g); 200 to 500 kg, two scoops (10 g); over 500 kg, three scoops (15 g). One scoop is 9 cc and holds 5 g. At the 10 g mid-range serving, a 1 kg pail is about 100 days of feeding; at 15 g, about 66 days. Warnings / Caution, quoted in full from the label: "For equine use only. Not for use in horses intended for food. Not for use in horses with hypothyroidism, seizures, kidney disease or liver disease, or during pregnancy or lactation unless directed by a veterinarian. Keep out of reach of children. A scale should be used with all individual ingredients to ensure accurate dosing."
